You may have heard about the transition from petroleum-based to vegetable-based inks, but you may also wonder what all the fuss is about.
Ironically, before the 1960s, the inks that were primarily used in the print process were vegetable-based, but petroleum inks were gradually introduced as a cheaper, better performing substitute. Unfortunately, it all came at a cost to our environment as heavy VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and hazardous pollutants were released into the air during the print process. These hazardous materials were also often washed away, reappearing in the water supply.
Fortunately, today’s vegetable-based inks cover all the bases. They are more competitively priced than they used to be, perform just as well as their more hazardous counterparts and are ultimately much kinder to the workplace environment and ecosystem. Design Printing is a proud proponent of vegetable-based inks for all your print needs.
